Bodega Goat Ranch Rainwater Catchment Project

Completed
The Bodega Goat Ranch is a team-farming operation that has integrated multiple small livestock production systems, vegetable crop farming, pasture management, and permaculture water management into its goat cheese production systems, including an innovative system for growing barley sprouts to replace imported feed. The property has multiple catchment ponds that trap overland flow and promote water infiltration into the gardens and pastures through swales. The Ranch currently does numerous tours and classes each year, allowing for the project to serve as a demonstration site.

Current climate change projections suggest that Northern California can expect significant challenges related to water supply and reliability in the coming years. Rainwater catchment is a promising and highly appropriate water conservation strategy in Sonoma County, which has a discrete rainy season that overlaps only minimally with the growing season. Rainwater can be captured and stored during the winter to be used during the dry season, when agricultural water demand is greatest and streams and rivers are at their lowest, thereby increasing water security.
Bodega Goat Ranch is a replicable model for small to medium farm enterprises. It is open for field trips and tours. Please contact William for more information.
The water that is stored in the rainwater catchment tank will be used instead of extracting groundwater from an existing well. Additionally, the operators reduced their herd size in order to match water demand and water availability.
For the past 15 years, Bodega Goat Ranch has diversified the animals raised, added bees, added a vegetable garden & the following measures toward the goal of using minimal inputs: 1) a 5KW solar system; 2) permaculture canals over 5/7 of the property; 3) Two ponds holding about 30,000 and 40,000 gallons of water; 4) Three 5,000 gallon tanks to store potable water from our well, utilizing a UV light and ozonator to avoid chlorinating the weII; 5) a 10xl0 greenhouse for sprouting barley seeds to avoid buying commercial grain . 6) a demonstration permacullure garden.
