Project #2017-05: Nicasio Riparian Fence Project is part of the Conserving Our Watersheds Program that assists landowners with stewardship activities to improve water quality and habitat. The project installed a permanent barb wire fence along a long stretch of a tributary to the Nicasio Reservoir. The fence will exclude livestock from the creek, thus decreasing the potential pathogen concentrations entering the water way, relieving foot traffic from the banks, and reducing herbivore pressure on the riparian vegetation. The landowners have secured additional funds to plant the corridor to further enhance the wildlife habitat value of this stretch of creek.

All components of this projects are part of the ranch's Carbon Farm Plan. While a fence and water development do not directly increase biological carbon sequestration, these practices are necessary supporting practices that enable a ranch to implement the carbon-benefical practices including planting practices that sequester carbon in the soil and in plant biomass.
Improving livestock distribution due to fencing will create a healthier pasture ecosystem, which should increase the soil water-holding capacity over time.
The distribution of livestock on the landscape is critical to the health of the pasture and the health of the watershed. By fencing livestock out of creeks, the rancher can effectively graze the upland areas and decrease the pathogen loading into the watershed by increasing livestock distance from water bodies.
This project was implemented on a parcel protected with an agricultural easement with the Marin Agricultural Land Trust, it remains in agriculture in perpetuity.
Providing cost-share to help ranchers be proactive stewards of the land empowers them and ultimately benefits their operation in the long run.
