Project Overview

Old Haul Road: Harwood and Keystone Creeks Crossing Stabilization
Completed
The San Mateo RCD helped San Mateo County Parks address erosion and safety issues on Old Haul Road, a legacy forest road in Pescadero Creek County Park, by stabilizing large, failing crossings at Harwood and Keystone Creeks which are tributaries to Pescadero Creek. The project reduced sediment sources into Pescadero Creek, and improved habitat conditions and water quality in the Pescadero-Butano Watershed for the benefit of native fish and other species. It also ensured safe road access for recreation, administrative and emergency purposes for San Mateo County Parks Department and CalFire.

Pescadero Creek has been designated by NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service as critical habitat for threatened and endangered populations of steelhead and coho salmon, and it is listed under Clean Water Act Section 303(d) as impaired by sediment for fish habitat. The project reduced excess fine sediment delivery into Pescadero Creek to improve water quality and fish habitat quality.
The project improved overall watershed health by reducing the amount sediment entering Pescadero Creek which benefits downstream fish habitat and flood protection.
