Eel River Road Sediment Treatment and Inventory Project

Completed
The purpose of this project was to implement and promote Best Management Practices (BMPs) to stormproof unpaved road systems to protect water quality in the Eel River TMDL watersheds. Achieving that goal was done by performing at least 30 road miles of sediment source inventory, implementing stormproof BMPs on at least 6.5 miles of unpaved roads, and hosting 3 workshops within the Eel River watershed promoting progressive road design concepts. Forest fuel reduction along a riparian corridor will be done to promote forest health and reduce risk of catastrophic fire impacts.

Project Themes

Project Themes

Road maintenance workshops educate landowners and equipment operators about progressive road designs and natural hydrology.
Reducing excessive road sediment input to salmonid streams benefits aquatic habitat quality for natural fish production
Reduction of high density forest fuels along the riparian corridor of a salmonid stream will protect this system from catastrophic fire impacts and increase carbon sequestration as the remaining forest thrives.
Storm-proofed road networks to reduce sediment input to streams, and promote natural hydrology and infiltration.
