Green Valley Farm + Mill Healthy Soils Project
Project Overview
Basics
Green Valley Farm + Mill Healthy Soils Project
Planning/Design
The mission of Green Valley Farm + Mill, an umbrella which hosts several regenerative agriculture enterprises, is to "reconnect people with land." Home to an organic vegetable CSA, a grass-fed cattle business, a small-scale dry-farmed vineyard, and a land-based community of 6 households, GVFAM is implementing a variety of strategies to demonstrate regenerative farming practices that strengthen the local food economy while improving the ecological quality of the land. This project will help GVFAM further their mission while beginning to implement and trial carbon sequestering healthy soils practices.

The Healthy Soils practices selected in this proposal not only help landowners achieve their management goals, they also offer both short-term and long-term environmental benefits to the project site. If selected for implementation, our project improves farm sustainability, soil health
and water quality at GVFAM. The addition of compost to the pastures and orchards, addition of mulch, the planting of trees, and the planting of hedgerows all reduce greenhouse gases and sequester carbon in soils and vegetation.
Regenerative land management recognizes that simply sustaining our current relationship will only continue a pattern of disconnection and extraction, and seeks to renew human participation in the stewardship of thriving ecological communities by creating again a reciprocal relationship with the land.
The GVFAM landowners also have goals to: Build economic sustainability; Produce food and other land-based goods for the surrounding community; Offer space and programming for education and demonstration; Create community and host a community of residents on the land.
Of primary importance within our landbase is the stewardship of steelhead and coho-bearing Green Valley Creek, which has been identified as a high priority tributary for salmonid recovery in the Russian River Watershed. The benefits of compost application to rangelands will benefit the health and resilience of the creek, potentially increasing underflow in
the dry season, and stabilizing water temperature, both important factors for rearing salmonids. Planting out the designated hedgerow areas will also cover bare soil, and limit cattle access to the seasonal waterway.
Green Valley Community Farm is one of three farming operations at Green Valley. This small organically managed vegetable farm is nestled in the land’s fertile valley alongside Green Valley Creek.
The heart of the farm is a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program unique to West County. Members enjoy free-choice on-farm pick-up of 15-20 freshly harvested fruits and vegetables each week; seasonal u-pick crops and gardens; and an invitation to visit the land, help out on the farm, and participate in seasonal celebrations and workshops.
