CARCD WCB Climate and Wildlife Project: Hedgerow & Habitat Improvement

Planning/Design
The habitat component of this project consists of two hedgerows. The first and largest hedgerow is a 2,022ft hedgerow that includes only large shrub species. This hedgerow will have 10ft centers and 1gal emitters for every plant and will require a total of 202 plants. The second hedgerow/habitat area measures a total of 270ft and will require a total of 45 plants. The purpose of this hedgerow is to beautify the street side for the community at the same time as providing diverse pollinator habitat. Other potential practices for pollinator habitat and to help mitigate dust and drift into the neighboring community include seeding a cover crop throughout the orchard.

Project Themes

Project Themes

The project will reduce the impacts of dust and pesticide drift into the neighboring housing community and create pollinator and wildlife habitat. This project has the ability to reduce impacts onto the neighboring community, increase and improve biodiversity and pest management on the farm, as well as reestablishing connectivity within the Central Valley.
A 5.27ac portion of the farm is proposed for orchard removal, which will greatly reduce groundwater reliance for irrigating the orchard.
A 5.27ac portion of the farm will be conserved and a 2,022ft hedgerow will be created.
