Copeland Creek Riparian Enhancement and Erosion Control Project
Project Overview
Basics
Copeland Creek Riparian Enhancement and Erosion Control Project
Completed
This project's goal was to improve water quality and the riparian corridor health along a 1600-foot, poorly vegetated reach of Copeland Creek, within the Laguna de Santa Rosa Watershed. This was accomplished by installing nearly 900 trees, shrubs, and willows (12 different species total), along the creek located on two mixed-use agricultural properties. The RCD worked with Point Blue Conservation Science: STRAW project to install the plants with 5 different local elementary and middle schools. The plants were installed over two years and maintained for additional 5 years by RCD staff.

Project Themes
Project Themes
Creating a more robust riparian corridor with a more diverse plant community will be more resilient to climate change than a sparse riparian corridor with few species.
Multiple elementary and middle school classes got to help with the planting activities and also received a presentation from STRAW staff on Watershed Health.
Copeland Creek once supported runs of steelhead salmon, and by improving canopy cover, we are providing more shade to the creek which will keep stream temperatures cooler and more suitable to steelhead populations.
This project improved the riparian corridor of Copeland Creek which contributes to the overall health of the Laguna de Santa Rosa and Russian River Watersheds.
