Healthy Soils Demonstration Project in Russian River Valley Vineyard
Project Overview
Basics
Healthy Soils Demonstration Project in Russian River Valley Vineyard
Planning/Design
The project consists of establishing a series of demonstration field plots at a valley-floor vineyard in Windsor, CA,. Thirty-six (36) field plots are set up in two vineyard blocks (Chardonnay and Pinot Noir blocks) in order to collect soil health data to assess the effects of compost application and different tillage frequency (no-till, alternate-row till, and full tillage) on soil health and soil carbon content. This project will continue for a term of 5 years to evaluate mid-term changes in soil condition. Parameters being analyzed include soil organic matter (SOM), Total Carbon, Active Carbon, bulk density, wet aggregate stability, and respiration.

Project Themes
Project Themes
Evaluating carbon sequestration potential of compost application and reduced tillage in a vineyard. Gathering soil carbon data from test plots with different tillage frequency and compost application.
An annual workshop will be hosted to educate winegrowers about the demonstration project, findings from the study, and how these practices could be implemented in their vineyards.
This demonstration project involves improving soil health through adding compost and reducing tillage, which in turn can lead to improved infiltration/groundwater recharge, reduced runoff and erosion, and so improved water quality and flow in nearby streams.
