Soil Health Hub Development in Sonoma County
Project Overview
Basics
Completed
A collaboration between RCDs and partners in Mendocino, Sonoma, and Napa Counties to establish a regional soil health hub for vineyards that will promote adoption of soil health-beneficial vineyard practices such as compost application, reduced tillage, improved cover cropping, and adding hedgerows to vineyard lands. Sonoma RCD's role included assisting in development/maintenance of soil health hub website, establishing a field demonstration project, completing 2 vineyard carbon farm plans, conducting 5 soil health assessments, and hosting 3 workshops. Costs noted are for Sonoma RCD only (does not include regional partner costs).

Project Themes
Project Themes
Gathering soil health data from vineyard sites to build database and develop appropriate goal values for healthy soil in Pacific North Coast region vineyards and also developing carbon farm plans to increase carbon sequestration potential on vineyard lands.
Hosted 3 workshops to educate winegrowers on multi-benefits of soil health beneficial vineyard practices and discuss pros- and cons- of adoption.
Healthy soils leads to better infiltration and water storage capacity, in turn improving streamflow and reducing flooding and runoff thereby benefiting the watershed.
