Crane Creek Water Quality Improvement and Education Project

Completed
Sonoma Resource Conservation District, in partnership with Point Blue Conservation Science: STRAW Project, Conservation Corps North Bay, and Sonoma County Regional Parks implemented a riparian planting and education project along two streams in Crane Creek Regional Park. A total of 334 trees and shrubs and 195 willows stakes were installed over the first two years of the project, with the help of 5 different local schools. The project was maintained for 5 years by STRAW staff. The project site was affected by the 2017 North Bay fires, so an additional 58 plants were installed in March of 2018. A total of 153 trees and shrubs were still during the final year of the project in 2018.

This project installed a series of native riparian trees and shrubs along 4,100 linear feet of streams. Species were selected based on their ability to withstand potential future climate change scenarios such as drought, fire, etc.
A total of 296 students from 5 different local schools participated in the the planting of the project. STRAW visits school classes before the project to educate students and teachers on principles of watershed restoration. Signage was also installed at Crane Creek Regional Park explaining about the project and the efforts of the partners involved.
Enhancing the waterways on Crane Creek helps contribute to the overall health of the Laguna de Santa Rosa Watershed.
