Project Overview

Basics

Watershed Restoration
In-stream Habitat Restoration
San Pedro Creek Fish Passage at Adobe Bridge

Planning/Design
This project will enhance riparian habitat and improve fish passage on San Pedro Creek by replacing the existing undersized box culvert with at bridge at the Adobe Road crossing. This will improve access to over 5 miles of instream habitat for federally threatened steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), reduce erosion and sediment in the creek, and improve habitat complexity. This project will also reduce flooding upstream of the crossing, aiding the residential neighborhood the creek flows through, and will reduce incision and excessive bed scour downstream of the crossing by dissipating flood flows and improving bank stability. The project also includes public education and outreach.

This project is situated adjacent to a historical Ramaytush Ohlone village site at what is now Sanchez Adobe County Park in Pacifica, California, with access to the creek through the park itself. The project was designed in collaboration with the Association of Ramaytush Ohlone to limit disturbance and ensure protection of historical and cultural artifacts that may be in and around the creek.

Project Themes

Project Themes

This project will improve habitat for federally threatened steelhead by restoring access to over 5 miles of instream habitat and improving habitat complexity. The project will replace an existing undersized culvert, which is currently a velocity and jump barrier to most fish at low flows and a velocity barrier at high flows. The barrier being removed was identified in 2016 as a Top Priority on the CDFW barrier list.
This project will improve ecosystem health, habitat connectivity, and habitat complexity to increase the adaptive capacity of San Pedro Creek and the resilience of the creek's federally threatened steelhead population. The project will also reduce flood-related impacts in the lower watershed.
