Atascadero Subwatershed Streamflow Enhancement Planning Project

Planning/Design
This project seeks to promote water conservation and alternative water sourcing in the upper tributaries of Green Valley Creek’s Atascadero subwatershed, where exceptional summer streamflow even in drought conditions has provided summer rearing habitat for salmonids, but where rural residential properties rely heavily on riparian diversions and near-channel wells. This grant will provide funding for community outreach, site assessment and prioritization, and design of 3-6 roof rainwater catchment systems with forbearance stipulations to offset summer stream diversions, serving as demonstration projects for other riparian landowners in the area.

Project Themes

Project Themes

With rapidly changing climatic conditions, resulting in more frequent, prolonged droughts, the high quality conditions of the Atascadero Subwatershed are threatened. This project plans to mitigate the negative effects of a warmer and dryer climate by increasing the streamflow of the creek.
This project will create more spawning habitat for coho salmon and stealhead trout, by increasing flows in the watershed's streams.
This project would increase flows to the Atascadero creek by reducing water drawn from residential wells near the riparian zone. This in effect will create more spawning habitat for coho salmon and stealhead trout.
