FA 50 Ph B Wildland Fire Protection Strategy

Completed
The Project is an all-lands hazardous fuel reduction project aimed at creating fire resilient forest ecosystems and fire-adapted communities. The project is one of several included in Fire Adapted 50 and the South Fork American River Cohesive Strategy. The landscape encompassed is representative of the current state of the Sierra Nevada as evidenced by the devastating effects of recent fires, drought and insect associated tree mortality.

Project Themes

Project Themes

Assess carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas reduction benefits by reducing the likelihood of wildfire emissions, improving the health and growth rates of trees and exploring various biomass utilization opportunities
The Project is Phase B of the Fire Adapted 50 series of projects identified by CAL FIRE, USFS, the El Dorado RCD and the Georgetown Divide RCD and is consistent with the Fire Adapted Communities component of the National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy. Fire Adapted 50 was developed to strengthen and expand existing fuel breaks in the Wildland Urban Interface/Intermix (WUI) zone of the SOFAR Watershed along the Highway 50 corridor where there have been five large and devastating fires in the last 40 years.
