CARCD WCB Climate and Wildlife Project: Howat Ranch CFP
Planning/Design
In 2019, the Yolo County RCD (YCRCD) completed an extensive carbon farm plan for 760-acre property owned by the City of Davis. The property is part of a large regional planning effort and is located east of the City of Davis. The YCRCD proposes to take the first step of the plan by installing 2,000 feet of hedgerow on one corner of the property. The initial planting will be done by high school students from a disadvantaged community in Sacramento, and led by the Center for Land-Based Learning, a local non-profit with 20 years of experience taking high school students on to farms and wildlands for habitat restoration work. The project is strongly supported by the City of Davis.

Reducing the carbon and greenhouse gas emissions that drive climate change are necessary to increase our wildlife’s ability to survive the effects of climate change. This project reduces GHG in the atmosphere, improves soil health, improves water retention, and improves wildlife habitat by implementing carbon farm plans.
The initial planting at this farm will be done by high school students from a disadvantaged community in Sacramento, and led by the Center for Land-Based Learning, a local non-profit with 20 years of experience taking high school students on to farms and wildlands for habitat restoration work.
The site of the property is part of a large regional planning effort for habitat restoration and carbon sequestration, including wetlands, and is located between the City of Davis, the Davis Wetlands Water Treatment Plant and the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area, and will provide connectivity for birds and pollinators between those three areas. Plants will be installed that provide nectar and pollen for beneficial insects and monarch butterflies.
