Monterey Pine Forest Health and Fire Prevention Planning
Project Overview
Basics
Implementation
The deliverables associated with this project include permitting and implementing at CalVTP project in Cambria, Ca. Furthermore the deliverables include the development of five Forest Management Plans in the rare Monterey Pine habitat type. However, after a modification the funds have shifted towards developing a regional Project Specific Analysis (PSA) that covers the entirety of the coastal zone (88,000 acres) in the USLTRCD jurisdiction. 150 acres of forested area will be treated post coastal PSA approval and before March 2026.

Selective thinning of smaller diameter trees promote the growth of legacy trees that have a high rates of carbon storage. Furthermore, burning piles in a controlled environment at low intensities releases less carbon into the atmosphere compared to high intensity wildfire.
This project has had multiple field days and workshops to educate the public and project partners.
Active management of rare forested habitat types increase the ecological health of the system and support biodiversity.
This project reduces fuel loads to promote forest health and fire resiliency.
The Monterey Pine forest is located in various watersheds in the region. Active management of ecological health of the forest will bolster the functionality of the watersheds they occur in.
