Porter Creek Streamflow Enhancement Project
Project Overview
Basics
Porter Creek Streamflow Enhancement Project
Implementation
This project provides a direct and measurable enhancement to flow in Porter Creek – a tributary that is critical to the survival of the endangered Central California Coast coho salmon.
The system, which releases water from a vineyard irrigation reservoir, will sustain in-stream pool habitat for listed coho salmon in Porter Creek in the dry season and provide higher flow releases to allow coho smolt out-migration in the spring. Streamflow, water quality, and fish monitoring will be conducted for three years to further understand how the water releases affect the fish and inform recommendations for the long-term operation and management of the water release system.

Explanation: | Water was released for smolt out-migration and instream summer rearing habitat in 2017. Water was again released for smolt out-migration in spring 2018 and then released in the summer to supplement baseflow for rearing habitat. Water was not released in spring 2019 due to naturally high flows resulting from increased late-winter/early-spring storm events. Instream summer rearing habitat is expected to be supplemented by flow releases in late-summer 2019. |

Water is released from an agricultural reservoir to supplement summer baseflow for endangered coho salmon. The system can also be used to hydraulically connect Porter Creek to the Russian River in the spring to allow out-migration of smolts.
