Rodeo Grounds Berm Removal Project
Project Overview
Basics
Completed
The Rodeo Grounds Road Berm is located on Topanga Creek, approximately 2,500 feet upstream from the Pacific Ocean, in Topanga Creek State Park, Topanga, CA. The berm was constructed between the late 1960’s and 1980 and extended roughly north to south, forming a barrier to natural flood inundation patterns and redirecting the flow of the creek channel to the east. In order to restore the natural creek hydrology, provide access to the entire floodplain, and restore access and habitat for endangered southern steelhead trout, the landowner, CA Department of Parks and Recreation (CDPR) determined that removal of the berm is necessary.

As part of the removal of the berm, restoration planting followed including young sycamore trees and oak trees with the intention of restoring riparian oak woodland that was historically present in the area, prior to the building of structures and the berm that were removed during this project. Re-establishing oak woodland habitat in this area will help mitigate the effects of rising temperatures due to climate change, reducing the impacts of evaporation and keeping water temperatures down for fish that may be in this area of the creek.
This project improved passage opportunities for anadromous steelhead trout returning to the headwaters of Topanga Creek to spawn and for juvenile smolts migrating to the ocean. Southen steelhead trout (O. mykiss) are listed as a federally endangered species and Topanga creek has one of the last natural populations of O. mykiss in the Santa Monica Mountains. This project also improved and increased spawning habitat for reproducing adults and rearing habitat for

This project removed an in stream berm that contained lead and diesel deposits. The natural function of the creek channel was restored and possible contamination of waters that enter the Santa Monica Bay via Topanga lagoon was eliminated.
