CARCD WCB Climate and Wildlife Project: Carbon Farm Planning
Project Overview
Basics
CARCD WCB Climate and Wildlife Project: Carbon Farm Planning
Planning/Design
Mission RCD will work with local growers, including those on Tribal lands, to further develop carbon farming planning in the region. We plan to support carbon farm plans with pollinator habitat and using native plants for beneficial cover crops, hedgerows, and/or windbreaks on ten different groves/farms/vineyards.

Project Themes
Project Themes
Many species of California pollinators and other wildlife are in peril due in large part to habitat loss and climate change. Restoring habitat and increasing carbon sequestration are necessary to increase our wildlife’s ability to survive the effects of climate change.
MRCD staff will include carbon farm planning when communicating with growers and providing other technical assistance. Staff will use existing relevant pollinator information and best management practices from Xerces, MJV, CCI, CDFW and others. As a partner in the So Cal Carbon Farming Hub and working with the San Diego Farm Bureau’s Carbon Farming Task Force will host two educational and demonstration workshops on native plants for cover crops and hedgerows, and build a peer-to-peer carbon farming community for information and resource exchange.
These projects will increase climate resilience and habitat corridors for Monarch butterflies and native bees. Monitoring of these sites will provide data to support conservation efforts.
This program will support carbon farm planning and provide consultation assistance with growers for implementation of pollinator habitat corridors including cover crop, hedgerow and windbreak habitats.

Notes
01/15/2025 2:18 PM | Lisa Dibbell | A new plan is in place for this funding and Miranda Vineyards is no longer a site. A new staff member, Emily Anderson, will be working on the carbon farm plans and workshops for this project. We should have new sites and more progress to report in six months.
08/13/2024 3:07 PM | Lisa Dibbell | Our staff member Jameson Meyst is working on the carbon farm plans for identified sites in our district under the CAPGP grant administered by RCD of Greater San Diego. When these plans are complete, those sites interested in implementation and open to signing landowner agreements will be included in this project.
01/11/2024 3:43 PM | Lisa Dibbell | Our first site visit is pending, however looking at the Miranda Vineyards property on Google Earth reveals potential areas for native plant conservation cover along the main drive and up the hill, and a hedgerow along the fence bordering the vines. |
