Forest Improvement on Non-Industrial Private Forest Landowners

Planning/Design
The Upper Salinas Las Tablas RCD will plan, permit, and execute three forest health and fire resiliency projects. Each project will be carried out on private parcels, treating approximately 20 acres of forested land per landowner. Additionally, the RCD will offer targeted technical assistance to at least nine land managers to help them deepen their understanding of the unique ecosystem functions on their properties and how to improve the health of their stands.

Project Attributes

Census Tract Income
True
Direct Benefits to Disadvantaged Communities (DACs)
This project will indirectly benefit disadvantaged communities. While the grant stipulates that eligible candidates must own forested land, most forested landowners in the SLO region are not considered disadvantaged. The deliverables associated with this project will have a positive impact on neighboring disadvantaged communities. Specifically, the project will reduce wildfire risks and enhance watershed functionality, benefiting surrounding areas.
EnviroScreen
Generally, populations in SLO county are not exposed to high levels of pollutants. The majority of the county is less than 10-20% with a few smaller regions reaching less than 40-50 percent.
Free and Reduced Lunch
False

Project Themes

Project Themes

Selective thinning of smaller diameter trees promote the growth of legacy trees that have a high rates of carbon storage. Furthermore, burning piles in a controlled environment at low intensities releases less carbon into the atmosphere compared to high intensity wildfire.
CalPoly SLO may be involved with monitoring and reporting effects of active management.
Active management of rare forested habitat types increase the ecological health of the system and support biodiversity.
This project reduces fuel loads to promote forest health and fire resiliency.
Project sites for this grant are located in various watersheds in the region. Active management of ecological health of the forest will bolster the functionality of the watersheds they occur in.
