Carbon Farm Plan #3 - Demonstration Farm

Implementation
The goal of the Marin Carbon Project Carbon Farming Program is to enhance agriculture's resiliency to climate change by providing producer outreach, technical infrastructure, and economic support in the implementation of carbon beneficial practices. The first step in the Carbon Farming process is to create a Carbon Farm Plan that captures a whole-farm’s potential in removing excess greenhouse gases from the earth’s atmosphere and into soils and vegetation building fertility, productivity and resiliency. The carbon farm plan encapsulates a visionary's perspective of carbon-beneficial practices that the farm can implement. It is the producer's aspiration to implement these practices over time.

Carbon Farm Plans quantify the difference one farm can make by implementing a suite of carbon-beneficial practices that remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and into the farm's soils and plant biomass.
Carbon Farm Plan #3 is one of three demonstration farms to inform others of the Carbon Farm Planning Program.
Practice implementation will improve soils, water, air, plants and animals in the San Antonio watershed.
Farm is preserved under easement held by the Marin Agricultural Land Trust.
A Carbon Farm Plan provides a farm with a future vision and path to increase farm fertility, productivity and resiliency.

Notes

12/26/2017 11:51 AM Elise Suronen Carbon Farm Plan #4 was written for a ranch in the San Antonio watershed that has been farmed for over a century. Historically a dairy, the last cows were milked on the Ranch in the 1980’s. Until 2013, the Ranch was run as a beef operation, with the addition of nearly 50 acres of vineyard in the 1990s. Today, approximately 36 acres of dry- farmed vineyard remain in cultivation, and nearly 70 acres is tilled for silage production, while the remainder of the property is leased for grazing of roughly 150 dairy heifers. The current lessee hopes to eventually revive a working dairy on the Ranch.
