Carbon Farm Plan #8 (Organic Pasture Raised Eggs, Beef Cattle & Rock Quarry)

Implementation
This 864-acre ranch is characterized by rolling pastures of mostly open, moderate to steep sloped grasslands and a heavily tree-lined creek corridor. The ranch is a thriving, productive, and diverse working landscape including livestock grazing (approximately 80 cow-calf pairs, year-round) and pastured laying hens (approximately 1700 laying hens). The Carbon Farm Plan seeks to: improve soil health, reduce erosion, and increase water-holding; enhance carbon sequestration above and below ground throughout the ranch; and, re-create access to historic anadromous fish habitat within the sub-watershed to Tomales Bay.

Carbon Farm Plans quantify the difference one farm can make by implementing a suite of carbon-beneficial practices that remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and into the farm's soils and plant biomass.
Practice implementation will improve soils, water, air, plants and animals in the Tomales Bay watershed.
Farm is preserved under easement held by the Marin Agricultural Land Trust.
A Carbon Farm Plan provides a farm with a future vision and path to increase farm fertility, productivity and resiliency.

Notes

12/26/2017 5:38 PM Elise Suronen Early settlers used the property for a dairy operation. The property was then used as sheep ranch from the mid-1950s into the late 1980’s with up to 800 commercial ewes at one time. During that same timeframe, the local family opened up a large commercial rock quarry that operated and ran until it was closed in 1992. To increase space for the quarry, the landowners re-channeled the main creek into its present day location. A septic pond operation was developed in the mid-1970s atop a ridge just northeast of the old rock quarry area. The area was formally used for the commercial disposal of sewage that was brought in by septic pumping trucks from holding tanks throughout the area. On an annual basis, solids that accumulated in the first pond were removed and spread with trucks on a designated area upslope from the septic ponds. In 2008, a developer purchased the property and the ranch lay idle, with the exception of a beef cattle lease and occasional recreational hunting.
