Project Overview

Basics

Watershed Restoration
Upland Habitat Restoration
Wildlife Corridors for Flood Escape on the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area

Implementation
The project creates five miles/23 acres of new habitat in the YBWA with the primary goals to: 1) Address wildlife flood-safety problems and enhance year round habitat and 2) Use regional partnerships to implement a pilot restoration program to provide educational opportunities and create public connections to habitat restoration in the Delta. The project consists of
1) Demonstration project of 0.6 acres seasonal wetland habitat (floodplain sub-habitat), 2) Restoration of 3.0 acres seasonal wetland habitat (grassland and associated wetland sub-habitats), and 3) Restoration of 20 acres upland habitat (grassland sub-habitat).

Project Themes

Project Themes

The project will create habitat corridors in the Yolo Basin Wildlife Area to provide green house gas reductions through the use of deep-rooted native perennial plants.
The project will provide education and community outreach through the implementation of the restoration project and associated biological monitoring. Part of the project will be to establish a pilot restoration project to provide educational opportunities and create public connections to habitat restoration in the Delta.
By providing wildlife flood-safety/year round habitat, it is anticipated that some endangered species will benefit from this project. The current conditions leaves wildlife stranded during flood events: deer, furbearers, and ground-nesting birds can be affected.
Projects to restore wildlife habitat adjacent to and compatible with the agricultural operations in the Bypass have not been previously attempted but are necessary to achieve Delta habitat restoration goals.
