Lifecycle and Distribution Monitoring for southern steelhead trout in the Santa Monica Mountians
Project Overview
Basics
Lifecycle and Distribution Monitoring for southern steelhead trout in the Santa Monica Mountians
Completed
The southern steelhead trout distinct population segment (DPS) spans from the Santa Maria River to the U.S.-Mexico border in California. Three creeks in the Santa Monica Mountains continue to support this federally endangered DPS: Arroyo Sequit Creek, Malibu Creek, and Topanga Creek. Climate change is making it increasingly difficult for these populations to thrive. For over 15 years the RCDSMM has conducted snorkel surveys of all three creeks to document the number of trout, size class, and distribution throughout each creek. This data has informed many restoration projects and we hope to secure additional funding to continue these monitoring surveys.

Through monthly monitoring, individuals trapped in imperiled locations have successfully been relocated into more stable pools with better habitat conditions. Young of the year, juveniles, and adult steelhead have all been relocated at some point during the monitoring period. Temperature probes are set after the rainy season each year in key pools to monitor temperature profiles during warm months, data that has shown us that southern steelhead have a higher thermal tolerance than steelhead in other regions.
During snorkel surveys, creek surface water conditions are monitored and recorded including areas and timing of dry down. Pools that are at risk of dry down and contain trout are monitored more frequently so any imperiled individuals can be relocated. Extent of dry reaches have been analyzed over the entire monitoring period to examine how the different creeks (and groundwater) have responded to climate change, increasing temperatures and less rainfall.

Notes
10/29/2018 3:33 PM | John Hendra | We currently do not have funding secured for any surveys after May 2019. This data set spans 18 years for Topanga Creek , which has a small but viable wild population of trout. Arroyo Sequit, while it struggles with excessive dry down, had it's first anadromous adult enter the creek from the ocean in the winter of 2017 immediately after three passage barriers had been removed from the creek channel. Malibu Creek may undergo restoration soon with the removal of Rindge Dam, and the data collected from these surveys would be imperative for pre- and post- restoration habitat assessment should the removal happen. We are searching for funding so that surveys can continue beyond Spring 2018. |
