Carbon Farm Plan #9 (organic pasture-raised eggs and dairy cows)

Implementation
This family farm currently raises about 5,500 USDA-certified organic, and pasture-raised birds, on 80 acres. The farm is also home to a small herd of Jersey cows. Un-irrigated pastures, grazed by both cows and chickens, make up nearly 75% of the farm. The landowner’s goals include: keeping the farm within the family; continuing to learn and improve land management practices; integrating trees into the pasture system for shade and forage; increasing plant and wildlife diversity; enhancing the existing compost operation; maintaining and improving carbon sequestration; increasing the livestock carrying capacity; and modernizing the on-farm egg processing facility.

Project Themes

Carbon Farm Plans quantify the difference one farm can make by implementing a suite of carbon-beneficial practices that remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and into the farm's soils and plant biomass.
A Carbon Farm Plan provides a farm with a future vision and path to increase farm fertility, productivity and resiliency.

The farm is located in the San Antonio Watershed in Marin County, currently raises approximately 5,500 birds, and 4- 6 jersey dairy cows. The pasture-raised eggs are USDA-certified organic and sold to Bay Area independent grocers. In addition to the Farm’s free-range egg production enterprise. Un-irrigated pastures, grazed by both chickens and cows, make up nearly 75% of the farm.
