Carbon Farm Plan #7 (Sheep & Goat Dairy)

Implementation
The 160-acre farm is utilized for sheep/goat pasture, dairying and cheese making. The flock is presently comprised of approximately 130 sheep and 175 goats. In addition to several residences, the farmstead area has a large hay/loafing barn, milking parlor, and creamery building. Grass hay is grown on forty acres of the property; there is also a small apple orchard and riparian exclusion area. Through their Carbon Farm Plan, the land managers have identified several goals to help direct their operation including maintaining or improving carbon sequestration on the farm; enhancing the carrying capacity of the ranch; making efficient use of waste-streams; and, operating a profitable business.

Carbon Farm Plans quantify the difference one farm can make by implementing a suite of carbon-beneficial practices that remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and into the farm's soils and plant biomass.
The carbon beneficial practices
Practice implementation will improve soils, water, air, plants and animals in the Estero da San Antonio watershed.
Farm is preserved under easement held by the Marin Agricultural Land Trust.
A Carbon Farm Plan provides a farm with a future vision and path to increase farm fertility, productivity and resiliency.

Notes

08/07/2020 1:16 PM Michelle Katuna Compost sequestration rate (1.49 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year) based off of Rebecca Ryals and Whendee L. Silver's 2013 paper: Effects of organic matter amendments on net primary productivity and greenhouse gas emissions in annual grasslands.
12/26/2017 4:44 PM Elise Suronen The property, 160acres, is primarily sheep and goat pasture, and dairying on the 100 eastern acres made up of approximately 15 pastures including a small orchard and riparian exclusion area. The flock is presently comprised of approximately 130 sheep and 175 goats. In addition to several residences, the farmstead area has a large hay/loafing barn, milking parlor, and creamery building. The hilltop pastures are currently used for a combination of grazing and “haylage” production.
